More about Fresh Water West

Freshwater West is a beach-and-reef break featuring both sand and rock bottom that works reliably year-round, facing southwest into Atlantic swells. Best performance comes on 0.5 to 2.5-meter ground swells from the southwest with light winds from the east-northeast, though waves form on all tides across the 6.5-meter tidal range. The break produces fast, powerful waves prone to tubes on larger swells, though it holds effectively up to eight feet or beyond. Expert surfers only—the beach is defined by hazardous strong rip currents flowing off its coast, rocks scattered in the lineup, and patches of quicksand that pose a serious hazard to anyone unfamiliar with the beach.

Freshwater West has hosted the Welsh National Surfing Championships since at least the 1960s and remains one of Wales' most consistent and widely respected cold-water venues. The spot draws experienced surfers and is popular with local surf schools during summer months when typical swells run two to four feet.

Access is via the B4319 road west from Castlemartin village, roughly three miles from the village center or eight miles from Pembroke town. Two small free car parks serve the beach—one at the northern end with a path through sand dunes to the shore, and one at the southern end with toilets and food services, accessed by steps or ramp. Parking is dawn-to-dusk only and can fill with campers during summer. The beach lies within Pembrokeshire Coast National Park on land managed by the National Trust.
