More about Frailes South
** Frailes South combines sand and reef, with waves typically in the 0.6-2.4 meter range that break both left and right. When a solid southeast swell lines up with west-northwest offshore winds, the reef peels with better definition. The break works through most tide stages, though a rising tide is generally more favorable. Rarely crowded, it demands patience since waves tend toward the small side and can be inconsistent, though it picks up energy during summer months, particularly July. The spot is better suited for intermediate surfers than beginners despite the gentle waves—the reef bottom adds complexity that makes it harder for novices than simple beach breaks.
The East Cape around Cabo Pulmo was first surfed in the 1950s by visiting California sailors and fishermen. The area gained wider exposure when surf filmmaker Steve Bigler shot footage there in 1967 for the documentary Golden Breed released in 1968. Frailes South itself lacks documented notable sessions or competitions, remaining a quiet satellite break in the region rather than a competition or destination spot.
Access requires a high-clearance vehicle and willingness to navigate a dirt road with soft sand patches that can trap regular rental cars; nighttime driving is not advisable. Free parking sits directly on the beach, which is also available for camping. There is no cell signal in the area, so downloading maps beforehand is essential. Beyond sharks, the reef itself is a hazard. The spot sits within or near Cabo Pulmo National Park, a protected marine reserve.
