More about Foz do Lizandro
Foz do Lizandro is a beach break formed at the mouth of the Lizandro river with multiple peaks distributed along the sand. The south end typically holds a left-breaking wave while the center features an a-frame peeling in both directions. Waves here strip down gradually with slow-building walls that reward clean technique, making it the primary teaching beach in the region. The spot handles swells from southwest through northwest; east or southeasterly winds are most favorable. While low to mid tide is typically best, larger swells can work at higher tides. Sandy bottom provides predictable shape across a wide range of conditions.
The river mouth creates significant hazard at any real size: strong rip currents flow seaward, particularly on the left side of the beach where the current is powerful enough to pull paddlers offshore quickly. Bigger swell days compound this risk considerably. Weekend crowds are consistent given the spot's accessibility from Lisbon.
The beach sits five kilometers south of the Ericeira headland, backed by high sandstone cliffs with a small settlement clustered at the shore. The river mouth makes the location obvious from above; parking and village access are straightforward.
