More about Fort Point
Fort Point is a left-hand point break that wraps around a rocky reef directly beneath the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. The wave develops steep, hollow sections that demand precision and experience. It is strongly tide-dependent, working best on a rising incoming tide or lower tide states paired with a south wind and northwest to west-northwest swell. The break only activates during the largest swells, particularly during winter months when northern Pacific storms drive waves toward the Bay. January typically offers the most consistent conditions.
Fort Point emerged as a public surf spot in the early 1970s after surfers successfully challenged an Army prohibition that had kept the historic fort closed to wave riders. The spot became a milestone break for big-wave surfers seeking an alternative during unsafe conditions at Ocean Beach. The combination of the dramatic bridge backdrop and the wave's selective nature—requiring genuine swell and precise timing—made it one of the most photographed breaks in surfing by the 1980s. Its status as a National Historic Site adds to its iconic standing in San Francisco's surfing culture.
The break sits at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge with free parking available in a limited lot on Marine Drive; when full, nearby Crissy Field offers additional parking with a short walk to the lineup. Access is straightforward from Highway 101, exiting before the toll plaza. Beyond the shallow reef and rocky bottom, strong currents can carry swimmers seaward into the Gate, and heavy consequences demand advanced skill. The location's status as a working national monument means the area also sees regular boat traffic and other maritime activity.
