More about Forrest caves
Forrest Caves is a reef and beach break that produces both left and right-hand waves. The break receives consistent southern groundswell year-round and performs best with south-southwest swell combined with northeast offshore winds; September and spring offer the most reliable conditions with clean walls. The break works across tidal ranges but the reef character and cave formations that define the spot are only accessible at low tide. Advanced surfers should be prepared for strong rips, currents, and a rocky bottom.
Phillip Island's surfing heritage extends back to the 1920s, with organized surf development through the 1950s and 60s marked by the establishment of the first clubhouse and early competitions. The island was designated Victoria's first National Surfing Reserve in 2013, recognizing its historical significance and consistent wave quality. Forrest Caves specifically has remained a relatively uncrowded break over this period.
Forrest Caves is accessed via a free gravel car park off the main Phillip Island Road between Woolamai and Surf Beach, with facilities including toilets and water. The beach walk passes significant sand dunes inhabited by shearwater colonies; the dramatic sea caves themselves are the defining landmark but are only safely accessible at low tide when the cliff base is exposed.
