Florence South Jetty

Florence South Jetty is a jetty break at the Siuslaw River mouth with a sandy bottom that produces two distinct setups depending on swell direction and tide. Small south or southwest swell combined with northeast wind creates sheltered, relatively mellow rights in the protected nook beside the jetty, particularly during summer months. Large west swell at low tide triggers a steeper, more hollow left that peels off the harbor entrance, offering more challenging shape but holding only about five surfers at capacity and attracting intense territorial localism.

The break is primarily surfed in small, clean summer conditions when both swells and winds align favorably. River currents present the main hazard—the water around the jetty mouth experiences strong ebb and flow that can push surfers out of position either toward open ocean or back into the river channel, and these currents make the spot unrideable in poor conditions. The active river mouth also affects water quality and creates dynamic current patterns at the jetty structure itself.

Accessing the break requires a six-mile drive through the Oregon Dunes on the South Jetty access road, starting with a fee kiosk south of Florence. The final stretches of pavement deteriorate significantly and are strewn with sharp rocks. This remote approach and the river mouth geography combine to keep crowds manageable most days, though the inner left's capacity and the region's reputation for localism can create tension on good waves.
