More about Flameballs

Flameballs is a powerful left-hander breaking over sharp coral that produces fast, hollow tubes with a demanding take-off before the wave rifles down the line with sustained speed. The wave responds dramatically to tidal stage and wind timing—it requires high tide in the afternoon when offshore southeast winds are still light, before the persistent trade winds strengthen from 2pm onward. South to southwest swell is most consistent during the winter months, particularly June, when clean conditions occur roughly two-thirds of the time. The significant tidal range means this spot turns on and off quickly, making it essential to catch the narrow window of favorable conditions.

The location near Anakao sees most serious surfing activity during the April-to-October peak season when Indian Ocean groundswells reach their stride. Beyond the technical demands of the take-off and close reef, surfers must contend with the remoteness itself—boat access takes 30 to 40 minutes from shore, and emergency evacuation to proper medical facilities takes at least two hours.
