More about Five Islands

Five Islands is a right-hand reef break in Huvadhoo Atoll that breaks hard and hollow on shallow coral with extended runs up to 200 meters in good conditions. The outside section handles the largest swells with deep takeoffs into steep walls, while the inside section relies on the shallow reef for its intensity. Wave heights typically range from waist-high to triple overhead depending on swell size and tidal stage.

Surfing in the Maldives became known in the 1970s when it was discovered in the region, and Five Islands developed into a recognized classic break in the Southern atolls as word spread among traveling surfers. The spot has remained relatively undiscovered compared to more accessible breaks, keeping crowds minimal despite the wave quality.

Access to Five Islands requires boat transport from resort islands or nearby atolls, which both limits the crowd and affects when you can actually get out to surf. The wave responds well to Southeast swell with offshore winds from the north-northwest, and performs best at mid to high tide when the shallow reef creates the most dramatic hollow sections.
