More about Fern Canyon Beach
Fern Canyon Beach is a sandy beachbreak that works best during high and mid tide and receives consistent winter swell from the northwest, with offshore winds arriving from the southeast. The beach forms part of the broader Humboldt County coast where conditions are generally challenging—large swells pound the area nearly year-round, making this primarily a winter destination when clean waves align with seasonal weather patterns. The break suits experienced surfers comfortable with cold water and powerful conditions; during the season's biggest swells, the shorebreak can be punishing and rip currents are prevalent.
Access requires driving eight miles along Gold Bluffs Beach Road from Highway 101 north of Orick. The beach sits at the northern end of Gold Bluffs where Fern Canyon opens to the ocean, within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Water temperatures remain consistently cold year-round, rarely exceeding 55 degrees, requiring full wetsuits and booties.
