More about Fence

Fence is a sheltered beach break located beside Port Elizabeth's harbour wall, generating both left and right-hand peaks. When southeast swells meet the harbour structure, they produce punchy left-handers along the wall. The break works best on mid-to-high tides combined with westerly winds, with autumn months—particularly March—offering the most consistent rideable conditions.

The spot got its name from an old barbed wire fence that ran along the harbour wall starting in at least the 1960s, when local surfer Gary Cooper was already surfing the break. As sand accumulated following harbour wall extensions, the original fence was gradually buried and eventually disappeared from view, though the name stuck.

From Kings Beach parking lot (free, but watch for car break-ins), walk left across the sand to access the break. Hazards include sharks, rocks, and currents. The combination of proximity to an active harbour and adjacent rocky features means the water can churn and the beach gets crowded on good days.
