More about Faria Beach
Faria Beach breaks over a cobblestone and rocky bottom with separate sections offering varying difficulty. The main break works best in winter with southwest-to-west groundswells in the 3–6 foot range, pushing the hardest on low to mid tide with northeast offshore winds. Waves are relatively fast-breaking with distinct bowls, making them accessible to beginners in the shallower cove sections but requiring some skill in the upper areas near Pitas Point. The break drains quickly during low tide when rocks become exposed, and the spot is prone to strong lateral currents.
Faria gained prominence as a surf destination during the mid-1950s when Ventura's early surfers were exploring the area's breaks. The cove section became known locally as Mondos or Mondos Cove, and figures like Jack Cantrell and Mary Monks helped establish it as a community spot where both novice and developing surfers could learn. The location remains historically significant within Ventura County's surf heritage, though it has never been a high-profile competition venue.
The beach is situated roughly 7 miles northwest of central Ventura along Pacific Coast Highway. Day-use parking within Faria Beach Park is extremely limited, with overflow parking prohibited on the highway itself. The small adjacent campground operates on a first-come basis and offers an alternative for those planning to stay overnight. The break's combination of restricted parking and the need to time tide and swell windows means it draws fewer crowds than more accessible nearby breaks.
