More about Fairhaven

Fairhaven is a beach break with a sand bottom that works best when southwest swells combine with north offshore winds, with winter—particularly August—offering the most consistent clean conditions. Waves here tend to be modest most of the time but can develop into more substantial sets on stronger swell days. The beach profile shifts unpredictably between seasons, making conditions changeable and harder to predict than many nearby breaks. Tide has little effect on wave quality.

The spot draws experienced surfers because of its wave potential but is better suited to those with some skill. Multiple strong rip currents run through the break, and the waves can develop considerable power when conditions align, making this a more hazardous paddle than its casual reputation might suggest.

Fairhaven Beach stretches for six kilometres and is the longest stretch of sand along the Great Ocean Road, with free parking in a large lot that fills quickly during peak season. Access is straightforward via stairs from the parking area, and an underground tunnel provides safe crossing under the main road. The Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club operates at the eastern end with full facilities including showers, toilets, and change rooms. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during summer months. From parking to water is a short walk.
