More about Explosives
Explosives is an exposed reef break at Moore Point that produces punchy, powerful waves best suited to advanced surfers. The break works primarily on southwest swells combined with southeast winds, performing optimally around mid to rising tide. Wave sections can produce barrels under the right conditions, particularly at lower tide on substantial swells, though the break only materializes reliably with specific swell and wind alignment and sees relatively few crowded sessions.
Strong currents run across the outer reef and can sweep surfers toward and past Geraldton Harbour, requiring local knowledge and experience. The shallow rocky reef bottom demands caution and skill; the adjacent Hell's Gate break is particularly hollow and demanding over its shallow bottom. Winter represents the optimal season, though paradoxically summer months (especially January) can deliver consistent clean conditions.
Access to Explosives is straightforward via Moore Point near Geraldton Lighthouse in Perth North. Four-wheel drive vehicles can drive onto the beach, and parking exists near the lighthouse with only a short walk to reach the breaks. A smaller gentler wave called Kiddies Corner sits in front of the lighthouse and is used by surfers as a warm-up before tackling the more intense Explosives and Hell's Gate reefs.
