More about Essaouira

Essaouira is an exposed beach break with multiple shifting sandbars that produce both lefts and rights, working best during winter swells from the northwest between October and April, typically in the 1-2 meter range with occasional larger pulses. The spot functions year-round but faces a defining challenge: sustained Alizé trade winds averaging 20-35 knots chop the surface most of the year, making clean conditions rare outside early mornings or the occasional east-wind day. The sheltered bay directly in front of the city offers smaller, steadier waves suitable for beginners, while the exposed outer breaks demand more experience.

Board surfing arrived in Morocco during the 1960s through European servicemen and travelers, with Essaouira establishing itself as one of the earliest regional centers where local entrepreneurs opened schools and shops. The area has hosted international competitions and developed a homegrown surfer base that includes nationally-titled athletes invested in youth programs. The community now balances steady local participation with a continuous stream of international visitors.

Essaouira sits on a headland roughly two-thirds down Morocco's Atlantic coast, with straightforward access from the medina to the bay's beginner breaks. Within 15-30 minutes by car lies distinct variety: the more demanding reef-and-beach break at Moulay Bouzerktoun to the north, and the established point-break character at Sidi Kaouki, 25 kilometers south in a working fishing village.
