More about Espinho

Espinho features multiple breaks across the exposed coastline, with the most celebrated being the Casino Right, a jetty-backed right-hander that peels off the groyne in front of the town's casino and can run 100+ meters with frequent barrel sections when proper winter swells arrive. Adjacent beach breaks offer a softer alternative with the same sand-bottom foundation. The break performs best on low to mid-tide with northwesterly swell, preferring east or northeast winds that keep the face clean. Waves typically range from shoulder-high summer fare to double-overhead winter affairs, making it suitable for intermediate surfers on the beach breaks and experienced surfers seeking the more critical Casino Right sections.

Espinho established itself as a competitive venue beginning in 2014 when the first Junior Pro event was held, launching what became a recurring stop on the World Surf League's European junior circuit. The event has drawn up-and-coming European competitors annually since then, with notable winners including Vasco Ribeiro and Tessa Thyssen at the inaugural event. The consistent hosting has put Espinho on the radar of professional development circuits across the continent, and local Portuguese surfers like Frederico Morais have cut their teeth on these waves before advancing to elite professional ranks.

Espinho sits roughly 20 kilometers south of Porto and benefits from direct train access from the city, making it practical for day trips. The break lies along Baía beach in a town with established tourism infrastructure including the Casino Espinho. Rip currents form regularly and require attention, and the proximity to Porto means the lineups can become quite crowded, especially during competition windows.
