More about Escolleras
Escolleras is a beach and jetty break at the Río Pánuco mouth in Tampico where both right and left waves break across sandy bottom, with right-hand rides favoring, particularly during the peak winter season when northerly cold fronts arrive. On the best days rideable waves can extend well over 150 yards. The break requires southwest swell matched with offshore north-northeast winds; fall and winter see the most reliable groundswell from frontal systems locally known as "Nortes," though spring can produce rideable waves under south wind influence. The surf here is moderately powerful and most consistent during January.
The most significant hazard is a strong rip current and undertow between tower 1 and the escolleras jetties known locally as the "elevador de la muerte" (elevator of death)—a depression where water flows seaward with enough force to pull swimmers out into the channel. Civil Protection recorded over 20 rescues in this zone during a single Easter week, and warning signage and rope barriers now mark the danger area, though swimmers frequently ignore the warnings.
Access is via a developed 1340-meter boardwalk promenade along Playa Miramar with tourist infrastructure including shops, food stalls, and souvenir vendors. The spot doubles as a popular urban waterfront destination, though swimmers and surfers should respect posted hazard warnings.
