More about Encuentro
Encuentro is a multi-peak reef break roughly 4 kilometers west of Cabarete that works year-round with approximately 350 surfable days annually. The Main Peak is the most accessible section, offering both left and right-hand options that break consistently over shallow reef in the 4- to 9-foot swell range, suiting intermediate surfers. The left side provides longer rides while the right tends to be faster. A separate and more advanced section called Destroyer is a steep, hollow left that fires properly only when northern swell reaches 8 to 10 feet; it breaks over a sharp reef in extremely shallow water and demands strong local knowledge and powerful paddling skills. The reef sharpens and becomes more critical as the tide drops, though overall tide height does not prevent the break from working. Northeast swell combined with southwest wind (offshore) produces the cleanest conditions, with winter months from September through April bringing the most consistent larger swells and best opportunities for experienced surfers, while summer offers smaller, gentler waves better suited to beginners.
Encuentro gained prominence as a competition venue relatively recently in Caribbean surfing. The World Surf League began holding the Cabarete Pro there in 2022, marking the first official WSL event in the Dominican Republic, with subsequent editions in 2023 and 2024. The event remains a QS 1000-level competition that has drawn international professional attention. The broader Dominican surf scene developed from the early 1970s onward, though the Cabarete area specifically became a known surf destination only in the late 1990s as word spread and local exploration expanded. Professional Dominican surfers including Manuel Selman, Gianmarco Oliva, and Max Self began competing internationally in the 2020s as resources increased within the country.
The beach sits between Sosúa and Cabarete in Puerto Plata province and is reached via rough, unpaved road that typically requires a four-wheel-drive or high-clearance vehicle, particularly after rain. From the parking area—parking arrangement details vary by source but at minimum some spaces exist near the beach—the walk to the lineup is short. The paddling area itself sits over a shallow reef with rip currents that demand strong swimming ability and proper respect. Hazards include the sharp reef, which cuts easily, sea urchins, rocks scattered across the bottom, and the powerful currents that sweep along the break, particularly in the Destroyer section.
