More about Emma Wood

Emma Wood consists of two distinct reef breaks named J-Bowls (a right in the north) and Mushpots (a left to the south). Both break on southwest swell, with J-Bowls preferring northwest swell and performing best on northeast offshore wind. Waves typically range from 4 to 8 feet, with mid to low tide producing steeper, faster waves than high tide. The bottom is predominantly smooth round rocks mixed with sand, particularly near the river mouth. Cold water and dangerous rip currents are significant hazards, along with sudden drop-offs and heavy shorebreak during large swell.

Emma Wood has been a surfing destination since the state beach's establishment in 1957, when California accepted land donation from the nearby Taylor Ranch. The spot has hosted regional Scholastic Surf Series competitions in recent years, drawing high school teams from across the county, though it remains relatively uncrowded compared to other Ventura County breaks.

The beach is accessed from Ventura via Park Access Road off Highway 101 at the southern end or State Beach Access Road off Pacific Coast Highway at the northern end. Free parking is available in a dirt lot overlooking the beach, with paid parking at the park entrance for $2. The north end has an RV campground, though beach access there was temporarily limited beginning August 2025 for roadway improvements.
