More about Elizabeth Bay

Elizabeth Bay is one of two longest left-hand point breaks among six world-class waves on Namibia's Skeleton Coast, capable of producing rides substantially longer and more consistent than South Africa's famous Jeffreys Bay. It draws most swell during the Southern Hemisphere winter (June through August), responding best to southwest and west groundswell with long period, alongside offshore winds from the east; exact wave heights and barrel characteristics depend on the precise sandbank formations and local bathymetry, which remain poorly documented in public sources.

The breaks on this coastline were largely unknown to the international surfing world until around 2008, when Skeleton Bay's discovery through satellite imagery brought attention to the area's potential. There is no documented history of notable competitions, prominent surfers associated with Elizabeth Bay, or significant public sessions—these waves remain among the world's least-surfed high-quality breaks, partly because access remains nearly impossible outside of specialized expeditions.

Access requires a Restricted Area Permit under Namibia's Diamond Act; the entire Sperrgebiet zone has been under tight control since the early 1900s. The marine environment presents real hazards: the cold Benguela Current brings near-Antarctic water, strong currents and undertows are common, and multiple shark species including bronze whalers inhabit the area. The nearest town with any infrastructure is Lüderitz, roughly 25 kilometers north.
