More about Elbow Ledge

Elbow Ledge is a hard, high-consequence reef break offshore from Newport that comes alive primarily during winter groundswells running from the south, with peak season typically from October through December and November as the standout month. North-northwest winds create the best shape across the reef. The wave is renowned as the biggest break in New England and has potential for extraordinary size, occasionally visible from coastal cliffs during winter storms and triggered again during summer hurricane swells. Extreme hold-downs of a minute or longer are documented, combined with powerful rips and undertow.

Access requires boat or personal watercraft, with teams of five operators recommended for emergency support. The break remains isolated and rarely crowded due to these barriers and its expert-only character.
