More about El Quemao

El Quemao is a fast-pitching left-hand reef break that tunnels over sharp lava with barrels reaching ten feet. It demands NW groundswell, particularly winter swells of fourteen-second-plus periods with E-SE wind support. Mid to full tide provides enough water over the jagged rock to minimize cuts; dropping tide should be avoided entirely as the shallow reef becomes genuinely dangerous. The impact zone is unforgiving and consequences are serious—skin lacerations and worse are routine outcomes of hard wipeouts. Expert tube-riding skill is mandatory; this is not a wave for learning or progression.

El Fula, a prominent local Canarian surfer, died paddling out here on New Year's Day 2009, and the Lanzarote Quemao Class was founded in his memory in 2015. The annual invitational, held over the two optimal swell days within a three-month waiting window, draws thirty-two selected surfers and bodyboarders from international ranks. The event remains small and selective, emphasizing respect for a wave that commands it. Mike Stewart has called it one of the world's truly unique venues.

La Santa is a working fishing village in Tinajo municipality on Lanzarote's north shore, reached in about half an hour from the airport via the main highway and secondary roads to the coast. The break sits directly off the harbor; parking is available at the village entrance with straightforward ocean access. The lineup carries a localist edge—surfers who know each other and the break's rules—though consistent conditions and the wave's reputation draw traveling surfers throughout winter months.
