More about El Porto
El Porto is a beach break where the wave forms over shifting sandbars, typically generating both left and right-hand options. An underwater canyon creates a wave magnet effect, producing noticeably larger swells than surrounding beaches—especially in winter from November through February when NW to WNW swells hold double-overhead faces. The break requires skill navigating between frequent closeouts to find rideable channels. It ranks among Southern California's most consistent year-round breaks, with autumn (particularly October) offering the best conditions. The difficulty ranges from accessible for learning swimmers when small, to challenging during larger swells.
El Porto has long served as a staple of the Southern California surf community, valued precisely for its consistency when other beaches run flat. It remains a working break with a substantial local following and serves as an introduction point for many beginning surfers due to its reliable wave generation.
The beach fronts the El Porto neighborhood of northern Manhattan Beach with metered parking at the 45th Street lot and lifeguard coverage during daylight. A paved bike path parallels the shore, volleyball courts occupy the sand, and a cafe operates behind the beach. Rip currents pose a genuine hazard, and the water regularly tests with poor quality markers, attributed in part to industrial seepage from nearby petroleum operations. Occasional great white shark activity has been documented in the area. The break remains less crowded than the pier zone to the south, drawing a steadier mix of local surfers than transient visitors.
