More about El Muelle
El Muelle is a shallow volcanic reef break located directly off Corralejo's harbor wall, with several distinct peaks that produce fast, hollow waves in shallow water. The break splits into an inside section favored by shortboarders and an outside zone preferred for longer boards. Conditions vary drastically with tide: at low tide, particularly on the left-hand peaks, the waves peel cleanly and predictably; at high tide the same sections break dangerously close to the exposed reef. The break produces waves in the 1.8 to 5.5-meter range when properly lined up, with an aggressive, slabby character when swell is heavy. It's an advanced-only break requiring substantial local knowledge and board handling skills.
El Muelle produces most consistent swell during winter and autumn months when northwest and west groundswells reach the break. Southwest winds provide ideal shape, though offshore wind can also work. The tidal sensitivity and reef exposure make this one of the more temperamental reef breaks in the Canaries—conditions shift hour to hour and session-to-session based on swell period, tide stage, and swell direction.
Access is straightforward given the in-town location near Corralejo's harbor, though the break's positioning on shallow, sharp volcanic rock creates a high injury threshold. Sea urchins nest in the reef crevices, and falls carry real consequences given the minimal water column over the rock. Water temperature ranges from 17–19°C in winter (requiring a 3–4mm wetsuit) to 21–23°C in summer.
