More about El Frontón

El Frontón is an A-frame reef break that forms rapid, vertical barrels over a shallow volcanic reef. Waves break for up to 150 meters across the face, peeling in both directions, and develop thick, swallowing tubes that demand precise positioning. The heaviest surf arrives between October and May on northwest through north swells, with the break working best between mid-tide and high tide during onshore or light winds. The shallow bottom creates the dense, slab-like character that earned El Frontón its designation as the first wave called a "slab" for its verticality. Hazards include tricky currents and the unforgiving reef; this is a wave of serious consequences where injuries occur frequently, and only advanced or expert bodyboarders attempt it.

El Frontón emerged as a world-class destination for bodyboarding in particular, earning recognition from professional riders as one of the five best waves in the world. The Gran Canaria Frontón King competition launched in 2013 and has become the most significant annual bodyboarding event globally, serving as the final stop of the IBC World Tour where world champions are crowned. The event has continued annually, including through the pandemic, and draws elite competitors from around the globe.

The break sits on the northeast coast near the village of Caleta de Arriba, accessible via a steep but walkable cliff descent through banana plantations. Parking is available near the break itself or entry can be made from nearby Agujero beach. The spot attracts crowds during swell, and its difficult terrain and powerful conditions mean that visiting requires local knowledge and respect for the break's hazards.
