More about El Faro
El Faro is a right point break that breaks over rocks and exposed reef, producing long, smooth walls that can stretch over 100 yards on the best days. The wave requires a minimum of 6-foot northwest swells, though it fires more consistently with larger winter swells arriving with north winds. The break gets hollow and exposed at low tide, making it hazardous to navigate; it's most manageable during mid to high tide, particularly on incoming tides. Only intermediate to advanced surfers should attempt it, and even they need to manage the exposed reef carefully.
Access to El Faro involves either a 20-minute rocky walk from El Anclote beach with no rest spots, or a more practical 5-minute boat ride via panga. The spot sits on the Punta Mita peninsula, surrounded by private resort development, making the boat option the standard approach for visiting surfers. The lineup is rarely crowded despite its quality.
