More about El Confital
El Confital delivers one of Europe's most consistent and challenging right-hand breaks, peeling across a shallow lava reef in water so thin that the take-off feels nearly vertical. The wave walls up dramatically and creates long, fast barrels that can peel for over 150 meters in pristine conditions. The hollow tube defines the entire break—it's why this spot has earned its reputation as a premier testing ground for advanced surfers capable of handling a steep, technical drop.
The Movistar Ocean & Earth Pro, an ASP World Qualifying Series 4-star event, was held at El Confital for at least nine editions running into the late 2000s. Multiple Australian and international winners claimed titles here, signaling the spot's place among serious competitive waves. The venue attracts visiting pros specifically for the combination of consistent swell windows and the rock-solid quality of barrels the reef produces during the right season.
El Confital sits just north of Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas, making it an urban-accessible wave with pedestrian pathways and road access. The shallow reef's sharp volcanic rock and the strong rip currents that develop, particularly on larger swells, demand respectful water knowledge and an exit strategy. Entry points exist along the break, but big-wave days can be deceptive—the water's natural push toward the rocks turns what looks like an easy paddle into a serious paddle-out.
