More about Eaglehawk Neck
Eaglehawk Neck holds both a beach break and a reef component in Pirates Bay on the Tasman Peninsula. The beach offers left and right peaks, while the reef produces tubular A-frame waves during good conditions. It performs best in winter on medium-to-large southeast swells backed by westerly (offshore) winds, with quality waves available across all tide states. Wave size ranges from small (under 1 meter) to about 2 meters on bigger days. The break is reliable and rarely crowded.
The Red Herring Pro-Am, an event featuring Australian top surfers and juniors competing for national ranking points, was held here in January 2026, though the location is overshadowed regionally by the more legendary Shipstern Bluff nearby on the same peninsula.
Eaglehawk Neck sits roughly 75 kilometers south of Hobart on the Tasman Peninsula, accessible via a one-hour drive. The beach itself spans about 200 meters. Notable hazards include sharks, rips, and rocks on the exposed stretch.
