More about Dungeons
Dungeons is a right-hand reef break that forms fast, hollow lines with notable double-up sections and long speed walls, though waves can close out depending on positioning and swell direction. Low tide produces the most organized waves, typically 8 to 10 feet on the face. The break works best during Southern Hemisphere winter (late July through August) when Southwest swell combines with Northwest offshore winds. Water temperature is cold year-round, and the break is notorious for treacherous currents, strong turbulence, and marine life activity—ranked among the world's most dangerous waves to charge.
Dungeons entered the big-wave lexicon in 1984 when South African surfers Pierre de Villiers and Peter Button first attempted the reef. The spot gained international prominence through the Red Bull Big Wave Africa competition, held annually from 1999 to 2008 across the July-August window. After an 18-year hiatus, the Cape Courage event revived big-wave competition there in 2026, drawing the region's elite chargers. Waves of up to 60 feet have been ridden at the spot, cementing its status as Africa's most serious big-wave destination.
Access requires a 15-minute boat ride from Hout Bay Harbour; there is no land approach to the break. The reef sits roughly half a mile offshore near the base of Sentinel Mountain at Hout Bay's western entrance. Hout Bay itself lies about 25 minutes by car south of central Cape Town via the Atlantic coast road.
