More about Doran Beach
Doran Beach is a sheltered, sandy beach break tucked inside Bodega Bay with a southwest-facing shoreline that generates mellow, forgiving waves ideal for beginners and longboarders. It works best on southwest swell with north wind, and while waves can arrive at all stages of tide, higher water levels typically produce cleaner, more manageable peaks with fewer close-outs. Typical wave faces are modest, though the sandbar sets up both lefts and rights; rides tend to be short as the break closes out quickly.
Access is via Doran Beach Road off Highway 1, about a mile south of Bodega Bay proper. The park opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Parking costs $7 (free for Sonoma County Regional Parks members); the site includes picnic facilities, restrooms, and a boat launch. Camping is available year-round with over 120 tent and RV sites. Weekends draw crowds, particularly in summer and fall.
Hazards include a shallow sandbar that can trap swimmers, rip currents, sharks (occasional in Northern California coastal waters), and scattered rocks in some areas.
