More about Doninos
Doninos is a two-kilometer sandy beach break producing both left and right-hand waves year-round, with particularly hollow and powerful conditions at low tide. The break works best with northwest swell and easterly offshore winds, handling swell from around one meter up to two and a half meters. The wave quality is considered advanced-level, with the beach accepting swell from multiple directions though westerly swells predominate. Low to mid tide offers the most defined peaks, concentrated in the northern section of the bay.
The beach has hosted international competition since at least 2006, beginning with European Junior Surfing Championships held annually in Ferrol. The GADIS Junior Pro Ferrol, part of the World Surf League's Junior Qualifying Series, brought over 110 international junior competitors to Doninos in 2021 and has returned in subsequent years as a significant regional event for developing surfers aiming for world championships. Beyond junior competitions, the beach accommodates Spain's national surfing championships.
Doninos sits on the Ferrol peninsula with two distinct access points: the northern entrance at O Outeiro, which offers ample parking and more developed amenities, and the southern Punta Penencia access, which is less crowded. The beach is equipped with over 100 parking spaces, showers, foot washing facilities, rescue services, food vendors, and bars. Both sandy composition and consistent facility presence make it accessible to visiting surfers, though summer weekends and warm-weather periods draw substantial local and regional crowds.
