More about Doheny State Beach
Doheny's primary waves break over a cobblestone and sand bottom rather than solid reef, with the main peaks offering slow, mellow right-handers ideal for longboarding and progression. The spot features multiple breaks—including the Boneyard and a reef section near the San Juan Creek mouth—that work best on south-southwest swells combined with northern offshore winds, functioning across all tides though mid to high tide provides better shape. Low tide exposes the cobblestone bottom, creating shallower conditions and exposing rocks, while the inside sections offer forgiving, beginner-friendly walls.
Doheny earned lasting cultural significance when the Beach Boys referenced "Down Doheny Way" in their 1963 hit "Surfin' USA," cementing the spot's place in American surf history. The broader Dana Point area became a cradle of modern surfing, home to pioneering shapers like Hobie Alter and filmmaker Bruce Brown of Endless Summer. Until the Dana Point harbor breakwater was completed in 1966, the area hosted more powerful point breaks and pipelines; today's configuration filters incoming swells but maintains consistent, accessible waves. The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association, active since 1988, hosts regular competitions including the Gathering of the Tribes and the Dale Velzy Event, preserving the longboard-centric culture that defines the break.
Access is straightforward but popular: the park charges $15 day-use entry and operates from 6 AM to 10 PM, with facilities including lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and a snack bar. Summer weekends see heavy crowds with early-morning parking queues; May through June and September through October offer quieter conditions. Beyond typical ocean hazards like rip currents, persistent bacterial contamination from stormwater runoff—particularly after rain—is a documented water quality issue at Doheny, making it advisable to check current advisories and avoid paddling out immediately following storms.
