More about Dogmans
Dogmans is a shallow, fast-breaking reef that throws both hollow lefts and rights with substantial power. The break performs consistently year-round and works well at any tidal stage, though it excels during winter swells when westerly and northwesterly swells wrap around the north coast. Easterly winds provide ideal offshore conditions; any other wind direction brings chop and cross-shore interference. The shallow reef requires advanced technical ability—waves can build to overhead-plus and respond quickly to swell and rider positioning.
Dogmans was discovered and named by pioneering big-wave surfer Danny Herlihy and the late Duke Michaels, who identified many of Rincón's now-classic breaks in the mid-20th century. The spot has maintained a low profile compared to nearby Tres Palmas and Maria's, preserving a quieter, more localized atmosphere despite its quality and consistency.
Dogmans sits along Route 413 on the north coast, a short distance west of Central Rincón, with free parking available. The entry is treacherous—the reef and approaches are dense with sea urchins, making reef shoes or booties essential and requiring knowledge of safe entry lines and tidal channels. Rip currents and undertow are present, particularly on larger swells. The spot draws fewer tourists than competing breaks, but localism is a real factor; visiting surfers should exercise respect and caution.
