More about Dixon Park

Dixon Park combines a sand and reef setup that works consistently across all tides, producing both left and right-handers that break for extended sections. The best conditions arrive with southeast swell meeting northwest offshore winds; the break handles intermediate-sized waves well, roughly chest-high to overhead, but closeouts occur when swell becomes too large. Hazards include powerful rips and occasional shark activity, plus localized crowds during good conditions.

Dixon Park SLSC has operated from this beach since 1932 (originally Scotts Beach SLSC, renamed within a year), making it one of Newcastle's oldest lifesaving and surfing hubs. The club hosts regular surf sports competitions and the beach serves as a venue for the Surfest Indigenous Classic and hosts events during the broader Newcastle Surfest World Surf League event.

Ocean Street parking is plentiful and well-developed, with direct beach access, showers, and toilets. Beyond basic facilities, the area includes a children's playground, off-leash dog zone, and a kiosk with light meals. Public shelters and barbecues across the road make it popular with families.
