More about Dillon Beach
Dillon Beach is a sandy-bottomed beach break at the mouth of Tomales Bay that generates both left and right-breaking waves. It responds best to northwest and westerly swells combined with offshore winds from the east, and works across tide ranges though performance improves at higher tidal stages. The break produces fast-peeling beach waves that close out above head-high but offer accessible, punchy conditions for intermediate and beginner-level surfers when smaller. Winter swells in the 4–8 foot range arrive most consistently, especially in January, while summer typically brings smaller rollers.
Access via the Dillon Beach Resort requires a day-use parking fee, though free parking exists before 9 a.m. and after sunset. The spot sees very little crowding even during prime seasons. The surrounding area is undeveloped—no traffic lights or chain restaurants—with basic facilities including restrooms and a nearby general store within the village.
Dillon Beach sits within the Red Triangle zone known for great white shark activity along the California coast. A documented shark incident occurred here in December, where the animal struck a surfer's board but the surfer escaped unharmed. The strong tidal currents associated with Tomales Bay's entrance pose an additional consideration for water safety.
