More about Dewey Beach

Dewey Beach is an average beach break with spreads peaks that tend not to concentrate crowds, as surfers typically migrate to stronger breaks nearby. Both left and right waves form here, and the sandy bottom response is fairly nondescript—conditions need to align well across swell, wind, and sand state to produce quality waves. When the right combination occurs, particularly with east-facing swell and western wind, the break becomes notably more rideable.

The broader Delaware and Virginia region has hosted organized surfing activity for over a century, with the region becoming particularly active through the East Coast competitive scene from the 1960s onward. Fall seasons after summer crowds disperse can bring consistent hurricane-generated swell that improves the spot noticeably from its typical average-day character.

Dewey Beach lacks localism problems and experiences minimal crowding except on the rare summer days when conditions and fair weather coincide to draw casual swimmers and tourists into the water. Access is straightforward with standard beach parking available year-round, though rates vary seasonally.
