More about Devereux
Devereux is a right-hand point and reef break that works best on westerly swells with shorter periods (under 15 seconds), breaking most consistently during winter, especially January. Mid tide produces the cleanest shape. Most days the wave is mellow and rolling, well-suited for longboarding, but at 6 feet and above it becomes steep and occasionally barrels. The paddle-in and exit require navigating shallow jagged reef, submerged rocks and boulders, kelp that readily tangles leashes, sea urchins, and natural tar deposits from the area's geology. No lifeguards are present.
Evidence in historical photographs indicates surfers have ridden Devereux since the 1960s-1970s. Today it remains popular with the UCSB student community, though specific documented competitions or notable sessions at the break are not well recorded.
The break is accessed via the Camino Majorca beach access near the far western end of Isla Vista. A stairway leads down to the sand, and from there you walk west along the beach to the point. Free parking is available at the Camino Majorca lot. The break is also known as Coal Oil Point, which has more restrictive permit-only parking arrangements.
