More about Del Mar Rivermouth
Del Mar Rivermouth is a sand-bottom beach break at the mouth of the San Dieguito River where it meets the Pacific. The wave breaks both left and right with nearby reef sections between 4th and 15th Streets offering slightly more shaped terrain for intermediate surfers. It works best at medium to high tide on southwest to west swell of at least two feet, with northeast or east wind—at low tide the sandbars tend to break down into closeouts or get too steep. The spot is tide-sensitive, with higher water producing softer, slower waves and lower water generating faster, hollower sections.
Beginner surfers find the softer peaks at this break manageable for learning, while more experienced surfers can exploit the reef areas during moderate swell. The river mouth location makes it vulnerable to water quality degradation after heavy rainfall, when pollution from upstream runoff can accumulate—documented cases include ear infections from post-storm sessions. Beyond pollution, hazards include rip currents, rocks on the beach, and the shifting sandbars characteristic of river-mouth breaks.
Del Mar Rivermouth sits at the border between Del Mar and Solana Beach and is accessible from the Del Mar beachfront with parking available at neighborhood streets and meters near 15th Street. The area is also known as Dog Beach, one of the few year-round off-leash beaches in Southern California, which shapes the local character and can affect crowding.
