More about Deba

Deba offers both beginner-friendly waves on the main beach and more challenging sections at the estuary mouth and reef break known as Sorgin-Zulo. The break works best on high tide with northwest swell and offshore south winds, though rideable conditions occur only around 48% of the time. Waves range from moderate size on the main beach to substantial on the advanced sections, with a rocky reef and sandy bottom creating hazardous conditions. Rips and exposed rock are consistent hazards here.

Deba holds occasional competitions through the Basque Surf Federation's Deba Surf Circuit, which has hosted regional championship events in spring months. While part of the broader Basque Country surfing tradition, it has not become a major international competition venue like nearby Zarautz or Mundaka, remaining primarily a quality local and regional spot. The break attracts experienced surfers seeking less crowded conditions, particularly on the powerful Sorgin-Zulo right-hander.

The town sits on the Guipúzcoa coast roughly 35 minutes from San Sebastián and 50 minutes from Bilbao, with access to two distinct beach areas separated by the Deba River. Multiple parking options exist, though weekend parking becomes limited, with year-round availability at Mercado parking and seasonal options at Nafarroa plaza and the free Artzabal lot. Winter, particularly December, offers the most consistent surfable conditions. A promenade runs along the coast, providing views of the lineup and easy pedestrian access to both breaks.
