More about De Haan
Den Haan is a straightforward beach break with a sandy bottom that produces both left and right-hand waves. It responds to north-northwest groundswell and works best with southeast wind offset. The spot is highly dependent on tide—high water brings the most rideable conditions, while the flat between high and low tide makes paddle-out sessions tedious. Water temperature swings from 23°C in summer to 3°C in winter. Spring, particularly April, offers the most consistent surfable waves; summer tends to be flat and blown out. Rip currents and strong tidal flow are the main hazards.
Den Haan is a beginner-friendly wave when conditions align, producing waves around 0.5 meters at smaller sizes and occasionally reaching logo-high on better days. The rarely crowded beach and manageable wave heights make it an accessible learning spot, though it requires exactly right conditions to be worth a session.
Access is straightforward via the resort town of De Haan on the Belgian coast. The beach is backed by sandy dunes and a Belle Époque seafront with paid parking available near the shore, though spaces are limited. The Beachclub Windhaan at the eastern end of the promenade provides facilities including showers, changing rooms, and a bar for after-session recovery.
