More about Davenport
Davenport is a two-peak reef break with distinct character on each section: a left-hand reef on the south end that can develop hollow tubes, and right-hand peaks on the north side. The left works best on a rising mid tide, while the right prefers lower to medium tide. The break handles multiple swell directions effectively—southwest swells are most consistent, though northwest and west swells also produce rideable conditions. Northeast winds provide the best offshore alignment. Waves typically run waist to chest high in summer, shoulder to head high through winter, with occasional triple-overhead days. The reef bottom has shallow sections and the exposed nature of the break draws occasional sharks and strong rip currents.
Davenport is situated nine miles north of Santa Cruz in a region historically tied to lime quarrying and cement manufacturing. While it is a contemporary surfing destination in the Santa Cruz area, specific documentation of when the break was first surfed or notable sessions there is not readily available. It remains a standard part of the North County Santa Cruz lineup.
The beach sits along Highway 1 with free but limited parking at the designated lot, and a sandy cove provides a relatively sheltered launch compared to more exposed Santa Cruz County beaches. Access is straightforward and facilities including wheelchair-accessible restrooms and a beach ramp serve visitors. The spot tends toward lighter crowds on weekdays but can be busy on weekends.
