More about Cudmirrah reef
Cudmirrah is a beach break with a reef component located on the South Coast of NSW near Sussex Inlet. The break produces both left and right-hand waves, with particular strength on the right-hand side where waves break over coral. It works best during winter months, especially May, when consistent southeast swell combines with northwest offshore winds. Summer conditions tend to be flat. The break suits intermediate surfers and handles a mix of groundswells and wind-generated swells. Paddlers should avoid catching waves all the way to shore due to submerged rocks, and need to watch for rips and currents that require staying toward the middle of the lineup.
Historical records are sparse, though user reports mention significant wave sizes in the early 1970s with barrels comparable to much smaller modern waves. The break has become a popular local spot that occasionally experiences crowding.
Access is straightforward via the free car park situated behind the Sussex Inlet Surf Lifesaving Club at the northern end of the beach on Pacificana Drive. The three-kilometre stretch of beach runs between Sussex Inlet entrance and Cudmirrah village, backed by sand dunes.
