More about Croyde

Croyde's reputation among UK surfers stems from its consistent beach-break setup that performs best from autumn through early winter, when Atlantic groundswell dominates and crowds ease. The sandbank configuration produces fast, barreling A-frame peaks at low tide, though this is also when the break becomes most challenging—deep sand holes create a compact lineup and generate the strongest rip currents, which flow particularly hard at the beach ends and near the rocks, occasionally sweeping surfers seaward toward Baggy Point. Intermediate and advanced surfers find the best balance on mid-to-high tides with west-southwest swell and easterly wind, which allow longer, cleaner rides.

Croyde's recorded surf history dates to World War II, when American servicemen stationed in Devon introduced surfing to the local community using wooden boards. Since then it has hosted the Jesus Longboard Classic for over three decades, establishing itself as one of the UK's premier competitive venues. The beach and surrounding coastline earned World Surfing Reserve designation, one of only twelve globally, cementing Croyde's status as a pillar of British surf culture.

Croyde village sits north of Braunton and offers multiple parking options: Down End Car Park is the largest and operates year-round, while Beach Field Car Park at the northern end provides the quickest beach access. A sloping path at the north end accommodates wheelchairs and pushchairs; southern access uses steps. Lifeguards patrol the beach during summer due to the hazardous currents and terrain.
