More about Cronkhite

Cronkhite is a sheltered sandbar break that generates multiple peaks depending on how tide, swell angle, and wind-driven bottom movement align on any given day. South and southwest swells combine with northeast offshore winds to produce the most favorable conditions, with the spot working best on smaller swells up to head-high. Beginner-to-intermediate surfers can find rideable waves, particularly at low to mid tide, though the break is notoriously unpredictable—even longtime locals cannot reliably forecast what shape the beach will hold until arriving for a session.

Located within the Marin Headlands section of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just three miles northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge, Cronkhite sits at the end of Rodeo Canyon on the former Fort Cronkhite military installation. The beach is accessible within a short walk from the parking area and remains one of only a handful of developed surf breaks along the Headlands coastline, making it a natural gathering point for Bay Area surfers. The spot receives consistent swell delivery and attracts both local regulars and visitors year-round, with summer bringing more predictable small-swell days and winter typically offering cleaner, more organized groundswell.

Hazards include unpredictable rip currents, submerged rocks, and the possibility of sharks, requiring standard Pacific California coastal caution. The beach itself features unusual geology—colorful pebbles in green and dark red tones derived from pillow basalts and chert scraped into the Headlands by ancient plate tectonic activity—alongside substantial cliff faces and a protected harbor cove setting that gives the location its distinctive sheltered character.
