More about Crantock
Crantock is a sandy beach with dual break character. At the northern end, the River Gannel estuary produces quality right-hand sandbank waves that can run for hundreds of metres, particularly favored by longboarders. The southern end near the Bowgie headland offers a more consistent left-hander, sheltered from southwest winds by the clifftop. Both areas work best at mid to low tide. The break handles a range of swell sizes, with small fun waves at the river mouth suitable for beginners and hollow sections that hold larger swells for intermediate and advanced surfers. It comes alive with west swell, turns on in southeast winds, and works year-round with peak quality September through November.
Navigating Crantock requires awareness of its natural hazards. The river outflow creates dangerous currents and rips, particularly around the estuary mouth. Rocks are present near the Pentire Headland cliffs. The break draws crowds when conditions align, though it remains less hectic than nearby Newquay options. Recent dune erosion has altered the beach profile, driven partly by channel migration of the River Gannel after 2014 storm damage.
Crantock sits roughly four miles west of Newquay with a small National Trust car park of 150 spaces at postcode TR8 5RN. Parking is free for members and Blue Badge holders, charged otherwise, with a 2.1-metre height restriction April through October. Cafes and toilets are on-site. The beach is accessible by bus (line 85, approximately 25 minutes from Newquay) or on foot when tides permit bridge crossings; a summer ferry service operates when the tide submerges the footbridge crossings.
