More about Crackington Haven

Crackington Haven breaks as a peaky A-frame over a sandy bottom bordered by rocky reefs on both sides of the cove. The waves generally lack power and are best suited to beginners and longboarders, working from 0.6 to 2.4 meters with west-northwest swell and southeast offshore wind. The spring months, particularly April, see the most consistent conditions. At low to mid tide the break is rideable in the center of the bay, but as the tide rises the waves deteriorate and surfers move onto a rocky shelf with increasingly unpredictable backwash. High tide also poses a hazard as the rising water can cut off escape routes from the bay.

The spot has an active local surf community with a longstanding Crackington Surf Life Saving Club, though I could not find documented accounts of specific competitions, notable sessions, or surfers historically associated with this break.

The beach sits in a sheltered village accessible via the A39 to Wainhouse Corner (postcode EX23 0JG). A pay-and-display car park near the village center requires coins; the walk to the beach crosses rough stone ground. The main hazards beyond the rocky borders are strong rip currents and occasional water quality impacts from river runoff.
