More about Cox Bay
Cox Bay is a mile-and-a-half crescent of hard-packed sand that produces both left and right handers across a range of swell sizes. The break receives swell from west through northwest directions most efficiently, with optimal waves in the 1–8 foot range; larger swells cause the bay to close out entirely. East winds provide the best offshore direction for cleaning up faces, though the spot works across all tide stages with a slight preference for rising tide. Winter, particularly January, brings the most consistent and powerful waves as southern Gulf of Alaska storm systems generate substantial Pacific swell.
Surfing in Tofino emerged in the mid-1960s when pioneers began riding the region's waves on handmade boards, legitimized by the first local competition in 1966. Cox Bay earned recognition as Canada's premier surf beach and became a watershed destination when the O'Neill Cold Water Classic selected Tofino as one of five global event locations in 2009, alongside South Africa, California, Tasmania, and Scotland. Local surfers like Pete Devries claimed major victories at this event, and Sepp Bruhwiler gained sponsorship as an early regional ambassador. More recently, Sanoa Dempfle-Olin rose to prominence by winning the Tofino Rip Curl Pro at age 11 in 2017 and later representing Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Two parking areas serve different sections of the beach. The northern entrance near Cox Bay Beach Resort offers a paved lot with washrooms, showers, and a wide accessible path to the sand. A second lot at the beach's middle provides additional parking with fewer amenities. Both areas enforce paid parking between 8 AM and 11 PM daily. An accessible beach ramp at Cox Bay North (1431 Pacific Rim Highway) accommodates visitors with mobility needs.
