More about Cowries

Cowries is a steep, hollow right-hand reef break over a shallow ledge near Shellharbour Village. It works best around mid-tide, particularly when the tide is rising, though it also functions at low tide. Southeast swell combined with southwest wind produce the cleanest conditions. Winter months offer the most consistent surf, with June typically the best period; summer is mostly flat. The shallow, exposed reef setup creates tight takeoff angles and fast, powerful waves that suit experienced surfers.

The break is known locally and has hosted organized competitions including the annual King and Queen of the Rock event. Cowries Island, the rocky basalt outcrop forming the northern harbor boundary, provides a sheltered backdrop and the area has been actively surfed as part of Shellharbour's local scene.

Access requires navigating sharp rock platforms covered in sea urchins; the geography connects to historic harbor infrastructure that dates back decades. Entry is notoriously difficult and requires careful route-finding. Strong currents are a consistent hazard that sweep toward the rocky shore, particularly when swell is pumping. The exposed location means weather and wave power build quickly, creating a heavy, unforgiving environment.
