More about Cowells
Cowells is a mellow right-hand point break with a sand-covered reef bottom that peels gently across the cove. The wave breaks longest at low tide and mid-tide, with the takeoff zone positioned near a small rock jetty. Best swell arrives from the west and southwest, with offshore winds from the northeast providing clean conditions. Winter brings the most consistent swell. The break is notably forgiving due to its sandy bottom, making it safe for learners, though the reef and surrounding rocks require awareness of tide levels and positioning.
Santa Cruz surfing centers on Cowells, which became a hub for the sport since the 1930s following Duke Kahanamoku's 1938 visit to the area. Jack O'Neill's first surf shop, opened at Cowell Beach in 1959, helped establish Santa Cruz as a major surfing destination. The beach itself is named after Henry Cowell, a limestone developer during the Gold Rush who purchased the beachfront land, which was eventually donated to Santa Cruz in 1954. Today it is widely regarded as one of the world's premier beginner breaks.
Cowells sits directly west of the Municipal Wharf in downtown Santa Cruz, within walking distance of the Boardwalk and with convenient parking on West Cliff Drive and near the Dream Inn. The extremely close proximity to town services and the gentle nature of the break make it highly accessible for learners and travelers. The main hazards remain the typical concerns of crowded breaks and strong currents, though the sandy bottom minimizes sharp-reef danger.
