More about Cottesloe

Cottesloe's waves are created by a fairly exposed beach-and-groyne setup that responds consistently to southwest swell. The groyne acts as a focal point where waves break off both sides, with the left-hand wall working better during larger southwest swells. Surfers paddling out to the groyne can find more structured lines, while the middle of the beach offers gentler, smaller waves. The break doesn't build particularly tall partly because Rottnest Island, about twenty kilometers offshore, blocks significant portions of incoming swell energy. Best conditions combine southwest groundswell with winds from the east-southeast, and these typically arrive most reliably in April. The spot works consistently year-round but rarely gets to the heights found at exposed Perth breaks further north.

Cottesloe began hosting organized surfing events in the late 1990s when a local longboarder discovered a whale's rib bone in the water and decided to create a trophy-driven competition around it. The Whalebone Longboard Classic, first held in 1998, has grown into one of Western Australia's most established surfing events and remains a grassroots celebration bringing together junior competitors through to masters-level surfers. The event's longevity reflects the beach's strong place in Perth's surfing culture despite it not being the most dramatic wave venue on the coast.

Access is straightforward with cafes and restaurants scattered along Marine Parade facing the beach. Crowds can be heavy, particularly during peak times. Rips and offshore currents exist alongside occasional shark presence, and the groyne structures themselves present hazards for less experienced paddlers.
