More about Costa Azul
San Pancho features two connected breaks within a single bay: a peeling left-hander off the point and a punchy beach peak near the river mouth. The point works best on larger, well-organized south to northwest swells with east-northeast offshore winds, requiring at least five to six feet to perform consistently. The wave breaks in shallow water and can barrel hard at lower tide, making it most suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. Summer months, particularly May through October, bring the most consistent groundswell energy; October records the highest frequency of clean, rideable conditions.
The bay has exposed rocks at low tide and generates powerful rip currents that demand competent water reading. The shallow sand bottom is unforgiving on hard impacts. Water quality can deteriorate after heavy rain due to river outflow, so local conditions warrant checking. Hazards also include sharks, which require standard Pacific coast awareness.
San Pancho sits roughly an hour north of Puerto Vallarta, about ten minutes' drive south of Sayulita along the coastal highway, or accessible via an hour's beach walk from Sayulita. The town itself has developed into a popular base for beginner-friendly instruction at smaller swells, though the main breaks serve intermediate and advanced surfers. Weekend crowds remain light by regional standards, though traffic increases when nearby Sayulita experiences blown-out or maxed conditions.
